Mediatel’s invite-only Year Ahead event tomorrow will bring together top industry voices from GroupM, Bauer Media, Clear Channel, Heineken, Ozone, Zenith, UM, Reach, and Mail Metro Media to discuss topics including talent, sustainability and trust in media, as well as four leading minds to discuss key media issues from 2022, and their predictions for 2023.

Ahead of the event, select panellists shared some of their media takeaways from 2022 with The Media Leader, including their biggest media surprise, most significant media personality and standout media brand of the year.

Simon Kilby, MD of Bauer Advertising at Bauer Media

Biggest media surprise of 2022: Elon Musk buying Twitter. The biggest shock in what was an annus horribilis for the social platforms.

Most significant media personality of 2022: Joe Lycett. A brilliant PR stunt that drew attention to the shameless sports washing of Qatar 2022.

Standout media brand of 2022: Channel 4, who ran a brilliant ‘don’t privatise us campaign’ while still delivering great content

Carl Nawagamuwa, investment managing director at GroupM

Biggest media surprise of 2022: Chris Rock taking that Will Smith slap on the chin and carrying on.

Most significant media personality of 2022: I would say the Lionesses in general, and for her crossover into mainstream media via I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! — Jill Scott.

Standout media brand of 2022: Amazon Prime – I’m a huge NFL fan and their streaming coverage of Thursday Night Football has been received extremely well – especially by younger audiences in the US.

We are amidst a streaming revolution, what we know as ‘TV’ and ‘Digital’ started blurring a decade ago and are becoming increasingly obsolete. ITV with ITVX, the rest of the PSBs, YouTube, Amazon and now Netflix and Disney+ — it’s going to be another very interesting 2023 in the world of ‘TV’ content and streaming.

Alison Phillips, editor at The Mirror

Biggest media surprise of 2022: Elon Musk buying Twitter. And all the subsequent fallout.

Most significant media personality of 2022: Pippa Crerar (then Mirror political editor) who brought down Boris Johnson followed closely by The Daily Star’s lettuce for bringing down Liz Truss.

Standout media brand of 2022: This brand certainly has dominated the headlines: Twitter, for all the wrong reasons.

Enyi Nwosu, chief strategy officer at UM

Biggest media surprise of 2022: The Royals being permanently in the news. From media coverage and reaction to the death of the Queen, through to Harry and Meghan’s Netflix showing.

Most significant media personality of 2022: Unquestionably Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Standout media brand of 2022: BBC’s coverage of the Women’s Euros has changed how girls and young women feel about playing football.
