Press Leaders Agree On Priorities, Says Survey

Press Leaders Agree On Priorities, Says Survey

Readership, distribution and advertising remain primary concerns for the future of newspapers across the globe, according to a new study from the World Association of Newspapers (WAN).

The survey, carried out by the Innovation International Media Consulting Group, canvassed the opinions of forty newspaper association executives in 33 states. Although the world’s press differs politically and culturally, from country to country, priorities remain largely the same.

In general, the three issues given the most emphasis were circulation and readership (especially among young people), improving distribution and advertising growth. The latter has taken on particular significance given the economic downturn in many markets. There is also growing competition from the online sector (see Online Advertising Revival Underway, Says Report).

Half the respondents said a key objective was to make internet operations profitable while one-third regard government regulation and interference as a problem. Planning and investment shortfalls are also seen as challenges.
