ITV Looks To Rival Sky With Transponder Lease Deal

As the BBC climbs further into bed with Sky (see BBC And Sky Team Up For Interactive Wimbledon Broadcasts), ITV has secured a more permanent arrangement by agreeing a 10 year deal with Société Européenne des Satellites (SES) for capacity on three digital satellite transponders enabling the broadcast of ITV services via ASTRA to the UK.

Each of the three transponders can accommodate up to eight channels, ITV plan to broadcast 16 regional services via satellite – covering the existing ITV regions plus special services for Wales and Scotland – from the end of the year.

Kate Stross, ITV Finance and Development Director, said “We are delighted to have concluded this agreement with SES. This is an important first step towards ITV broadcasting on satellite.”
