Global Publishers To Examine New Online Strategies

The vexing question of how publishers can make money online will be the hot topic at Beyond the Printed World, a conference to be held in Rome next month.

The event, organised by the media technology association Ifra, the World Association of Newspapers (WAN) and the International Federation of the Periodical Press (FIPP), will feature case studies of online business successes and strategies devised to increase profits in the long term.

“The pressure on online opertations to contribute to the bottom line is intensifying,” said Timothy Balding, Director General of WAN. “Publishers worldwide are seeking new initiatives and techniques for generating revenues from advertising, content and other sources. There are a lot of exciting ideas being developed and Beyond the Printed World will examine the most promising of them.”

The conference takes place on 30 and 31 October and will examine new concepts such as ‘dayparting’, which offers different content at different times of the day, as well as a number of promising advertising initiatives.

There will be presentations by Northcliffe Newspapers, which has created a network of local portal sites to complement its regional newspapers, and the Irish Times, which has linked its online service with its printed edition to launch ‘Web To Print Products’ in the key classified markets.
