Facebook threatens to remove news in US over journalism competition bill
In brief

Facebook threatened to remove news from its platform in the US if the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act is passed, a bill that will allow publishers to collectively negotiate commercial agreements with social media companies about how their content may be distributed.

Meta published a statement saying it would be “forced to consider removing news from our platform altogether rather than submit to government-mandated negotiations that unfairly disregard any value we provide to news outlets through increased traffic and subscriptions.”

Meta has made similar threats in Australia and Canada over similar legislation.
