European Cinema Box Office To Take €7.4bn By 2007

European cinema box office revenue will reach â‚Ź7.4 billion by 2007, a 29.8% rise on 2002’s â‚Ź5.7 billion, according to an upcoming report from Screen Digest.

By 2005, cinema admissions in the European Union countries will have reached one billion, up from 910 million in 2002. Separate figures from Dodona Research show that admissions across the whole of Europe already topped one billion last year (see European Cinema Admissions Top One Billion In 2002).

Between 2002 and 2007, admissions will rise by 20% in the EU, according to Screen Digest. Box offices revenues will grow even more strongly, up by 33%, as a result of cumulative ticket price rises over the period.

The report says that multiplex screens will play a key role in European screen growth over the next five years, with considerable room for growth in several European territories. The UK has one of the highest proportions of multiplex screens – more than two thirds of all cinema screens in 2002.

The number of screens across the whole of Europe is set to rise from 29,067 in 2002 to 31,593 by 2007; 89.4% of these will be in the EU member countries.
