DVD To Grow Twice As Quickly As VHS

DVD To Grow Twice As Quickly As VHS

By 2007, 110 million European homes – 67% – are expected to have a DVD player or recorder, according to a new report from Screen Digest. It took the video recorder almost 20 years to achieve this.

In the five years since DVD players were launched in Europe, sales have been out performing all expectations. Last year, the number of European homes with a DVD player rose from 19% (30 million) to over 34% (50 million). In the UK, 45% of households owned a DVD player by the end of 2003 and this is expected to jump to 78% by 2007.

In 2003, spending in DVD & video recorder households totaled to â‚Ź13 billion and Screen Digest believes this is mainly due to the launch of DVD. Since 2002 digital format has also dominated the renting and buying video sectors; spending on DVDs is expected to account for 93% of spending on video software by 2007.

UK spending on DVD software is by far the biggest in Europe, totalling â‚Ź3 billion in 2003 alone. The French market is the second largest with spending for the same period reaching â‚Ź1.7 billion.

The report says that DVD has affected the way people are choosing to watch films. We are spending more on buying and renting DVDs than we ever did on VHS, it claims. Money spent going to the cinema has declined since the launch of DVD.

Helen Davis Jayalaths, a senior analyst at Screen Digest, said: “The collectability of DVD means that increasing numbers of consumers are opting to buy their favourite titles on disc, rather than rent them – a trend which has had major repercussions on the very structure of the video business in recent years.”
