Consumers Expected To Buy HDTV

Research firm, Yankee Group has found that 78% of US consumers are aware of high definition TV (HDTV) and 20% plan to purchase HDTV sets by 2008.

Yankee said that sales of HDTV monitors reached 3.2 million in 2003 and predicts this to rise to 20.2 million by 2008.

The report says that the growth will be fuelled by many factors including, HDTV being able to offer more and more high-definition content for prime-time viewing such as sports events and concerts, the Federal Communications Commission mandate requiring that all TV sets produced by 2006 have digital tuners and the price of HDTV sets declining by about 20% a year.

A number of technological advances will also help boost the HDTV market. The introduction of easier to configure HDTV sets and increasing ways to integrate high definition content into a large digital entertainment setup is set to play a part, says Yankee.

Yankee advises manufacturers to work on educating the public about HDTV to drive growth. A myriad of choice in TV and of how to receive HDTV has left customers confused and they need somewhere to turn for answers.
