CMP Figures Show Continuing Weakness In Hi-Tech Advertising

Advertising volumes at United Business Media’s (UBM) US technology publishing division, CMP Media, fell by 20% in October, after a 3.6% increase during September (see Hi-Tech Publishing Ad Decline Eases Slightly In September). However, the decline is exaggerated given that there were five weeks in October during 2000 and 2001, but only four weeks this year.

The business-to-business information technology market as a whole decreased by 28.3% in advertising page volumes in the month of October compared to October 2001 and by 61.0% compared to October 2000. CMP Media’s continuing hi-tech publications recorded a 19.7% decrease against October 2001 and 50.4% decrease against October 2000.

September and October Taking September and October combined, the IT publishing market as a whole decreased by 19.9% in ad page volumes compared to the same period in 2001. CMP Media’s continuing publications recorded an 8.4% decrease against September and October 2001, still outperforming the market and in line with expectations.
