397.5 Million Digital Set-Top Boxes Will Be Installed Worldwide By 2007, Says JPA

According to Digital Set-Top Box Market Review & Forecast 2001 – 2007 released this week by Jon Peddie Associates, the worldwide set-top box market is poised for significant growth despite technologial challenges and the current economic troubles in the entertainment market.

“The struggle between low cost and the increased capabilities of digital set-top boxes will continue to provide great challenges for the industry,” commented Christine Arrington, senior consumer media technology analyst at JPA. “However, technology will be integrated incrementally and the consumer will increasingly welcome new capabilities over the next five years.”

The term ‘digital set-top boxes’ refers to a large and growing number of stand-alone devices used in the home including subscriber television services such as cable and satellite as well as more advanced systems including games consoles, DVD players, internet TV and Personal Video Recorders (PVRs).

JPA forecasts growth in all of these categories.
