Revenue

Terrestrial television including GMTV saw a 2% fall in total revenue, year on year, during September, recording an overall figure of £257.5m. According to agency estimates, ITV’s revenue dropped by 5.3% during last month, while Channel 5 increased 9.4%.

Channel 4 was up 6.3% while GMTV fell 6.5% in a yearly analysis. Total satellite continues its pattern of growth, increasing 9.9% to £38.3m.

Year on year increases in revenue share for the ITV franchises were again fairly small this month with the exception of LWT, which went up 1.9 percentage points.

Central retains its position as the holder of the largest share of any franchise, taking 15.8%, just ahead of London area franchise holder, Carlton, who slipped 0.6 percentage points to a 15.3% revenue share.

Granada’s north-west and Border franchises saw the greatest fall in a yearly analysis, slipping 0.8 percentage points.

Commercial Impacts

During September, significant falls in commercial impacts were seen in all categories for ITV and Channel 5. The largest drop for both channels came from the ABC1 Adults category, which fell 9.9% year on year on ITV and 22.1% on Channel 5. Men also dropped significantly, falling 10.3% on Channel 5 and 7.8% on ITV.

At Channel 4, meanwhile, increases were seen across the board. Housewives with Children saw a particularly large increase, rising 26%.

Satellite saw double figure increases in all categories, the highlights being ABC1 Adults, up 34.9%, Housewives with Children, up 26.9% and Housewives, up 24.3%.

Costs Per Thousand

Costs per thousand at both ITV and Channel 5 rose year on year across all categories during September. The cost of reaching ABC1 Adults saw particular increases, up 5.1% on the ITV network and rising a massive 40.4% on Channel 5.

Channel 4 bucked the trend, however, decreasing in all categories, with the biggest drop in the Housewives with Children category, down 15.6%.
