Top Gun: Maverick opens with quarter-billion dollar worldwide gross

Top Gun: Maverick has grossed $124m at the US box office in its first three days after release.

This makes the sequel to the 1986 film Tom Cruise’s biggest ever opening weekend of his career and the fourth-biggest opening since the beginning of the pandemic behind superhero blockbusters Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and The Batman.

Paramount is estimating the film to reach $151m domestically over the long Memorial Day weekend in the US.

Worldwide, the film has taken $248m in cinema ticket sales over its opening weekend, debuting in 62 overseas markets.

The UK & Ireland led all overseas markets with an estimated $19.4m.

The Paramount and Skydance film was originally slated for release in 2019 but was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tom Cruise co-produced the film and reprised his role as US navy pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the sequel.
