A record 533 journalists are now detained worldwide, according to non-profit group Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
That is 13% higher than last year’s figure, which previously held the record.
The world’s largest jailer of journalists continues to be China, which accounts for 110 detainees. Myamar (62 detained journalists) and Iran (47 detained journalists) are second and third, respectively.
RSF’s report also notes that 57 journalists were killed this year, 65 journalists are currently held hostage, and 49 are missing.
RSF has been tracking the number of jailed journalists since 1995.
