RAJAR Results Q1 2005: Capital Ahead On Reach But Heart Moves Infront With Hours

TV Easy The latest RAJAR figures for the three months to March show Capital FM retaining its position at the top of the London market with 2.1 million listeners, over 200,000 ahead of its closest rival, Heart 106.2.

However, the latest RAJAR data shows Heart 106.2 listeners are tuning in for longer than their Capital counterparts, giving the station the largest share of listening in the capital. Heart now commands a 7% share in London, compared with Capital FM’s 6.1% share.

Chrysalis-owned Heart has taken a huge step forward with its increased share of listening, from a total of 5.3% last quarter, representing a rise of 1.7% points quarter on quarter and 1.2% points year on year. The station has also boosted its weekly reach, adding 4.08% year on year to just under 1.9 million.

The change in fortunes is sure to disturb Capital bosses ahead of their merger with GWR, especially as the group’s flagship station is also being squeezed by Emap’s Magic FM, with a 6% share of listening compared to Capital’s 6.1%.

Magic has also seen its weekly reach rise, adding an impressive 18.06% year on year to command a total audience of just over 1.7 million, and while Capital saw its weekly reach slip by 9.91% in the same period, the station has notched up a quarter on quarter increase of 3.23%.
