Observer Sale Handed To Heseltine

The Department of Trade and Industry took on the proposed acquisition of The Observer last week, with little objection from outside parties. The paper’s union did hand in a complaint to Industry secretary, Michael Heseltine, who will decide whether the case should go to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission.

Meanwhile, features editor of the Guardian, Alan Rusbridger, has been appointed deputy editor of the paper following the news last week that Jonathan Fenby is to take over as new editor of The Observer (Newsline 20/5).
