NRS National Newspaper Round-Up – June 2002

NRS figures for the first six months of 2002 show that during the period there has been little change in the number of people reading national newspapers. However, there have been winners and losers.

GMG group emerged as the main winner in a year on year comparison. The Guardian saw the best percentage increase year on year, while Sunday stablemate the Observer also saw its readership grow.

Other good performers were the Daily Telegraph, and the Daily Star. Northern & Shell’s other national papers, the Express titles, continue to bring mixed news. The Daily Express saw an increase in its readership during the period, breaching the 2 million mark, but the Sunday Express slipped.

The largest loss of readership in actual numbers terms was at market leader the News of the World. However, the drop this represented was not as bad as that seen at the Independent or the Sunday Mirror.
