National Newspaper NRS Round-Up – June 2000

Advertising revenue for the Sunday titles may be up (see Ad Revenues Up For Sunday Newspapers), but the downward slide in reader numbers shows no sign of abating, as the latest NRS figures for the six month period ending June 2000 show a year-on-year decrease of 5.1%, with the majority of titles losing readers.

Having restored its full title earlier this year(see Express To Regain Old Name In Centenary Revamp), the Daily Express bucked the trend by putting on 79,000 readers, representing a year-on-year increase of 3.3%. Its weekend stablemate the Sunday Express also managed a comparably good performance year-on-year, increasing readership by 1%. The Observer was the only other title whose yearly figures did not suffer, as it neither lost nor gained readers during this period.

Once again the Sunday People was among the worst performers as it dropped 10.4% year-on-year. The Times fared worse however, its readership falling 13.4%.
