The latest data from the National Readership Survey (NRS) shows a continuing decline in readership figures, with a YOY decrease of 4.4%. The largest losses were seen at the Sunday People which dropped 18.3%. The Mirror also fell 14.3% and The Times 11%.
News of the World’s 5.7% drop was put forward by some as the reason for editor Phil Hall’s sudden departure (see News Of The World Editor Quits). Former deputy editor of The Sun Rebekah Wade has been given the task of reversing the downward trend as she takes over as NoW editor.
A couple of titles managed to buck the trend. The Guardian increased its readership by 7.6% compared to last year and following its centenary revamp and reversion to its old title (see Express To Regain Old Name In Centenary Revamp), The Daily Express’s readers increased by 4.4%.
