A London-wide cable network distribut- ing local programming and offering advertisers a one-stop alternative to ITV could be in place next year following agreement in principle amongst the Capital’s cable TV operators to build a new fibre-optic link connecting their systems.
The link-up would reduce distribution costs, open up the 100,000 subscribers to advertisers and promote new programme opportunities.
For channels broadcasting on the same satellite, there would be the option to be distributed across London via video, facilitating the insertion of localadvertising.
In addition, there would be new possibilities for local London channels.
Videotron, which operates franchises in west and south London, is hoping to import programming from Ireland’s RTE which could then be broadcast to the Capital’s Irish inhabitants.
