ISBA Says New ITC Code Fails To Meet Expectations

ISBA has criticised the new Independent Television Commission advertising standards code, claiming that it does not mark a major liberalisation of television advertising regulation as the ITC had originally suggested.

However, ISBA also believes the code does not present any further restrictions to advertisers and provides useful clarification of previously woolly issues.

Ian Twinn, ISBA Director of Public Affairs, commented: “Although the code revision has failed to live up to the original promises of major liberalisation, advertisers will welcome the new code, which offers clarification on details of the code, whilst demanding no significant restrictions.”

The code was published after an extensive period of consultation with the public, as well as advertising bodies including ISBA. However, the revised code delivers very few changes to existing guidelines (see ITC Publishes Revised Advertising Standards Code).
