Ignition, New York: 14 more observations…

Ignition

… from The Business Insider IGNITION conference in New York last week.

  • Consumers will start to see online advertising that works (especially in social) as “a service” not a promotion.
  • Angry Birds has decided that rather than spend on legal fees closing down pirates in China it will partner them (or pirate the pirates if they have a good idea). This includes an illegal (pirate) Angry Birds theme park that has sprung up in Shanghai!
  • Despite there being a panel of investment heads from WPP, Conde Nast, and Time Warner etc, the feeling among New York analysts and aspiring online businesses (but not the biggets players, it seems) is that media agencies and media owners have had their fingers burnt with major digital investments (such as MySpace ) and have now “given up”.
  • So… media owners and media agencies have had it basically.
  • And so have traditional retailers.
  • Henry Blodget (boss of Business Insider and ex NY analyst) is obsessed with size. “How big can you get?” (for your insert interviews with Twitter, Facebook, Google, Angry Birds, etc).
  • Google, Facebook or Twitter do not think they will be “the next Yahoo!”.
  • To go truly viral you need a fresh (on-trend) network and a creative idea.
  • The iPad is being used so much in bed it may limit middle class population growth.
  • We should expect Apple to innovate strongly around voice and gestures next (so more “conversation” in bed while you order the shopping… or play Angry Birds).
  • Sheryl Sandberg (Facebook COO) has no ambition to be US president one day.
  • Re-tweets and hashtags were started by Twitter users, not by the company.
  • There are more Duane Reades (pharmacy chain) in New York than McDonalds.
