Global SVOD platforms ‘move away’ from subscriber growth to profitability

Global revenues from subscription video on-demand platforms (SVOD) are forecast to increase to $127bn by 2029, according to new research.

Digital TV Research’s Global SVOD Forecasts report predicted Netflix will retain the largest share of this total revenue with $33.5bn, followed by Disney+ with $13.6bn, HBO with $8.2bn, and Amazon with $7.4bn.

The “big six” US-based platforms were expected to contribute $12bn collectively to SVOD revenues between 2023 and 2029, making their combined total $72bn.

Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research, said: “The key metric for the main SVOD platforms has moved away from subscriber growth to profitability.”

Country by country, the US will make up 10% or $2bn of the additional $20bn in revenues between 2023 and 2029. Other growth areas include Brazil, Germany, Japan and South Korea which will each grow their SVOD revenues by up to $1bn respectively.

By 2029, the US and China will share half of global SVOD revenue total.
