Europe launches competition probe into Microsoft-Activision deal
In brief

The European Commission has opened an “in-depth investigation” in to the proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft.

It is concerned the proposed acquisition would “significantly reduce competition in the markets” for distribution of console and PC video games and PC operating systems as Microsoft could “foreclose access” to Activision Blizzard’s console and PC video games like Call of Duty from rival distributors.

The Commission now has 90 working days to take a decision.

The UK Competition and Markets Authority has also opened an investigation into the merger over antitrust concerns.
