Digital TV Now Reaches More Than 10 Million UK Homes

The market for multi-channel television has experienced unprecedented growth so far this year and now extends to more than 10 million homes in the UK, according to a new study from Continental Research.

The Autumn 2003 Digital TV Report reveals that the successful launch of Freeview and growth of the Sky digital subscriber base has significantly boosted the market for multi-channel services in this country.

The research shows that the overall number of UK homes with cable TV has declined slightly, but the growth in digital satellite and digital terrestrial services has more than helped compensate for this.

Continental Research claims that 2.1 million homes now have Freeview, which is attracting older customers who previously rejected multi-channel TV. It also brought good news to Sky by revealing it is on target to reach its goal of 8 million homes by 2005.

The report also reflected the growing popularity of new technology, with one in three digital subscribers listening to digital radio via their TV and 37% of digital subscribers accessing interactive services.

Commenting on the research, Dave Chilvers, director at Continental Research, said: “The launch of Freeview has attracted new interest to the multi-channel market and helped push the number of digital TV homes past 10 million for the first time.”

The latest wave of VIPer research, which explores the media consumption of the UK’s most influential and affluent socio-economic group, shows that the increasing popularity of Freeserve has helped digital TV penetration to rise to 55% of AB adults aged between 25 and 54 (see Research Shows VIPers Sink Fangs Into Digital TV).
