BBC Radio 1 Increases Share And Reach

BBC Radio 1 has turned in a strong performance in the latest RAJAR figures, showing increases in both share of listening and weekly reach. The station’s share rose by 0.5% points to 10.3% and weekly reach was up by 0.9% to just under 11 million listeners. This means that Radio 1 is still the country’s most popular station, in front of BBC stations Radio 2 and Radio 4.

The national commercial stations, however, did not look quite so healthy. Virgin Radio’s reach dropped back by 6.8% to 3.3 million and its share fell 0.2% points to 2.2%. Atlantic 252’s reach dropped 10.2% to 2.1 million and Classic FM’s was down by 0.9% as it fell back below the 6 million listeners line. Share of listening dropped for all of the national stations apart from Radio 1 and Talk Radio which remained static at 1.8%.

As the RAJAR survey is now operating under a new methodology, year on year comparisons are prohibited. However, data from the period to March 1999 can be compared with this release which covers the period to June 1999.
