AVOD growth will ‘double SVOD’ as global OTT revenues reach $235bn

Global over-the-top (internet media) revenue for TV episodes and movies will reach $235bn by 2028 — a 53% increase compared to last year.

That is according to Digital TV research, which estimates this year’s increase will be 11%, or $17bn, up from $154bn in 2022.

Within this, advertising-funded video-on-demand (AVOD) is forecast to reach $91bn by 2028, more than double the $41bn it was set to recoup in 2022. AVOD is expected to grow nearly twice as much as subscription VOD (SVOD).

The US will remain the dominant territory by some distance. Its share of global revenues will be 41% by 2028 and US revenues will climb by 35% between 2022 and 2028 to reach $97bn.

Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research, added: “From the 138 countries covered, the top five will command two-thirds of global revenues by 2028. This proportion is down from 73% in 2022; revealing that the rest of the world will grow faster.”
