According to new research from the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), 67% of American households play computer or video games.

Of these gamers, 62% play with other people in person for at least an hour a week, and the average age of game players is 34 – down slightly on last year’s 35.

The number of female gamers is down 3% from last year’s research, meaning that 40% of current game players are female.

The survey also found:

  • 48% of parents play with their children at least once a week
  • 76% of parents believe that the parent controls found in new video controllers are useful
  • 64% of parents believe games are a positive aspect of their children’s lives

42% of Americans now play games on wireless devices, echoing research found by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project earlier this year, which reports that six in ten American adults now go online wirelessly.
