3D box-office sales are slipping

World Cup in 3D

UK 3D box-office receipts fell £7 million to £230 million in 2011, reducing its share of total ticket sales from 24% to 20%.

The average sales per 3D film fell from £8.5 million in 2010 to £4.9 million last year, despite a record number of 3D films being released including the final Harry Potter film.

A report by Enders Analysis suggests that this is because the “period of experimentation is over”.

The report claims that cinema-goers are less interested in 3D now – they tried it out a few years ago when it was new but they are more aware of the costs associated with 3D films now (tickets cost around 30% more than for other films).
