TV Market Round-Up – September 2006

TV Remote Control September saw substantial drops in revenue for all terrestrial broadcasters, with GMTV faring worst, having lost over a quarter of its revenue year on year.

ITV1 also had a poor month, even though it was the start of the new season and new dramas and ratings bankers such as X-Factor returned to the screen. The channel’s revenue dropped by £20 million year on year, ending the month on £131.5 million.

Channel 4 and Five also saw reductions in revenue, dropping by 7% and 5.5% respectively, meaning the total terrestrial revenue for September was down by over 11% year on year.

By comparison, revenues in the satellite sector rose by over a fifth, ending the month with nearly £85 million.

ITV Franchises

Following the trend from last month, Central saw the greatest increase in its share of ITV1 revenue, rising 1.3% points to 16.6% share, contributing the largest share of all the franchise areas.

By comparison, Carlton and LWT both saw their share fall by 1.4% points, down to 15.1% and 11.5% share respectively.

West Country remained the provider of the smallest share at 2.2%, however it added 0.3% points to its share year on year.

Costs Per Thousand

ITV1 saw most of its CPTs for our featured audiences fall during September, with Women and ABC1 Adults dropping by 3.7%. The only audience that saw its price go up was Men, which rose 2% to £22.91.

Channel 4, meanwhile, saw price rises across all featured audiences, with the exception of Women which fell by 3.5% year on year. Men and ABC1 Adults both saw large price rises, increasing by 20.6% and 18.8% respectively.

Five saw its CPTs all increase between 9% and 11% during September. Housewives with Children was the only exception which increased by 2.6%.

Commercial Impacts

Impacts were down for all terrestrial broadcasters during September across all our featured audiences. ITV1 felt the most consistent reductions, with between 10% and 15% drops in viewers over the month.

Channel 4 meanwhile, suffered the greatest impact falls for its Men and ABC1 Adult audiences, which both fell by over a fifth.

Five also had a tumble in impacts, with all featured audiences, with the exception of Housewives with Children, falling by between 13% and 15%.

Even with satellite showing good year on year impact growth, total broadcast impacts fell during September as a result of the low terrestrial figures.
