Spotify poaches Yahoo’s Kristiana Carlet for international sales chief

Exclusive

Spotify has hired Yahoo’s Kristiana Carlet to be the audio streaming company’s international sales chief, a newly-created commercial role, Mediatel News can reveal.

Carlet is a Yahoo veteran, having worked at Yahoo for more than 20 years and was latterly vice-president of international sales.

She will begin her new role at Spotify next week, Mediatel News understands, and report to Lee Brown, head of advertising business. Brown revealed last October that Spotify had hired “an ad industry exec with 25 years of international experience” in an interview with Reuters.

Regional sales leads outside of the Americas, including head of EMEA enterprise sales Rak Patel, will report to Carlet, as will Japan and Asia-Pacific and emerging markets.

Spotify is hiring hundreds of people in commercial sales roles in order to boost the company’s ad revenue relative to what it makes through subscribers who pay and don’t listen to ads while streaming music.

Founder and CEO Daniel Ek told investors last year that Spotify should be bringing in 20% of its income through advertising revenue, more than double what the company has historically achieved since it launched in 2006.

Neither Spotify nor Yahoo was able to immediately comment.
