Global banned from advertising ‘Official Big Top 40’
In brief

The Advertising Standards Authority has upheld a complaint from the Official UK Charts Company that Global’s “The Official Big Top 40” was “misleading”.

The “The Official Big Top 40” ad, which included a logo and text from Vodafone, ran in November 2018 (pictured, main image). The webpage was edited in January 2019 to delete the reference to Vodafone but kept the title “The Official” (pictured, below).

The ASA found the ad had breached rules around misleading advertising and endorsements as “official” had several interpretations, including recognition or support by official bodies.

The action taken meant Global can not run the ad in its current form again.
