Gallagher tipped to be appointed as The Times editor
In brief

The Times’ deputy editor Tony Gallagher is set to be announced as the newsbrand’s editor, replacing John Witherow, The Guardian has reported citing News UK sources.

Witherow has been editor since 2013 but has been absent in recent months due to illness.

As acting editor in June, Gallagher ran a news story about Boris Johnson allegedly trying to install his then mistress Carrie Symonds into a Foreign Office role while he was Foreign Secretary. After Gallagher pulled the story from a later edition without explanation, the story attracted worldwide attention and called his decision into question.
