CNN names new chief digital officer, ‘signals cuts to Originals and staff’
In brief

CNN has named Athan Stephanopoulos executive vice president and chief digital officer of CNN worldwide.

Stephanopoulos joins CNN following eight years as president of Vox Media-owned social media news organization NowThis, signaling CNN president Chris Licht’s desire to broaden CNN’s appeal to younger audiences.

Separately, The New York Times is reporting the company plans to cut back on buying original series and films as part of broader cost-cutting measures. Such shows, which would cease to be purchased going forward, include hits like Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy and RBG.

Last week, Licht reportedly signaled to staff that the media company may be forced to layoff employees as it seeks to cull its budget amid broader spending cuts at parent company Warner Bros. Discovery.
