In brief

Revenue from TV and movies watched on internet devices such as smart TVs and mobile devices is forecast to reach $45bn in Western Europe by 2028, up two-thirds (67%) from the $27bn recorded last year.

Over the next five years, the UK will account for more than one in five (22%) of dollars earned from over-the-top TV and movie revenue, according to Digital TV Research. The UK will account for $10bn in 2028, with Germany at $8bn and France $7bn.

Video-on-demand revenue from ad-funded platforms (AVOD) will also grow faster than subscription revenue (SVOD) over the next five years, according to Digital TV Research’s principal Analyst Simon Murray.

AVOD revenues are forecast to increase by $10bn between 2022 and 2028 to reach $16.2bn in Western Europe, while SVOD revenues will total $23.6bn by 2028 — up 41% from 2022.
