Anthropic ups the ante in Generative AI race with Claude 3.5 Sonnet

OpenAI rival Anthropic just launched Claude 3.5 Sonnet, its latest and most powerful generative AI model yet. It follows Anthropic’s debut of its Claude 3 family of models in March and OpenAI’s GPT-4o in May. The new model is already available to Claude users on the web and on iOS, and Anthropic is making it available to developers as well.

Claude 3.5 Sonnet boasts improvements

Claude is one of the chatbots that, like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, has exploded in popularity in the past year. Anthropic, which was founded by ex-OpenAI research executives, has backers including Google, Salesforce and Amazon. In the past year, it closed five different funding deals totaling about $7.3 billion. The company said Claude 3.5 Sonnet excels in several areas compared to its predecessor, Claude 3 Opus. “It shows marked improvement in grasping nuance, humor, and complex instructions, and is exceptional at writing high-quality content with a natural, relatable tone,” Anthropic said in a blog post. It can also write, edit and execute code.

Focus on efficiency and enterprise appeal

Anthropic positions Sonnet as a cost-effective solution for developers, offering competitive performance at a reasonable price. This strategy aligns with Anthropic’s goal of attracting enterprise customers, who may prioritize reliability and safety over groundbreaking capabilities. The company’s push for enterprise users began in May when it launched its first-ever enterprise offering. The plan for businesses, dubbed Team, had been in development over the last few quarters and involved beta-testing with between 30 and 50 customers in industries such as technology, financial services, legal services and health care.

Seamless collaboration for business teams

One of the standout features of Claude 3.5 Sonnet is the introduction of Artifacts, a collaboration tool designed for teams working within businesses. It allows multiple Claude 3.5 Sonnet users to edit generated content like documents and code in real time. “This preview feature marks Claude’s evolution from a conversational AI to a collaborative work environment,” said Anthropic. “It’s just the beginning of a broader vision for Claude.ai, which will soon expand to support team collaborations.”

Looking forward: bigger and better?

Anthropic promises even more powerful models in the pipeline, boasting features like personalized preferences and web search, which would allow Claude to safely browse the web and give users real-time information with source links.
